Seniors More Likely to Shop for Cable Than Medicare
Study also shows most don't review coverage annually
by Randy Lilleston, AARP, November 16, 2017
Older Americans are more likely to shop for cable and internet plans and gasoline than they are for Medicare, according to a recent survey released by a managed care services provider.
The survey, by Tampa, Fla.-based WellCare Health Plans, said only a third of seniors comparison-shop for their Medicare plan. That compares with 54 percent who shop to save money for groceries, 45 percent who shop for home or automotive insurance, and 40 percent who shop for a cable and internet plan.
"The emergence of a new epidemic among seniors — an epidemic of apathy when it comes to Medicare coverage — could have a significant impact on the financial health of seniors," Michael Polen, executive vice president of Medicare and operations for WellCare, said in a statement.
Are You Having Problems With Walking or Balance?
It may be time to evaluate your gait for better health and long-term fitness
by Karen Blum, AARP, February 23, 2022
Maybe you used to love walking in the park, but now that you’re getting older, you’re moving a little slower or worried about falling. These are among the signs that you may want to have your gait, or walking pattern, evaluated by a medical professional.
You are not alone. At least 30 percent of people ages 65 and older report difficulty walking three city blocks or climbing one flight of stairs, and about 20 percent require the use of a mobility aid — like a walker or cane — to walk, one study reported. Gait disorders have been detected in approximately 25 percent of people ages 70 to 74, and in nearly 60 percent of those ages 80 to 84.

The car accident in 2021 started it all, recalls Nancy Tarbox, 62, owner of a housecleaning service in Bradley, SD. In the process of treating her after the accident, doctors discovered some health issues, including cardiac problems. Turns out, she needed a stent, a device to keep blood vessels open. And after that, her doctors sent her off to cardiac rehabilitation.
She committed to attending the program—a mix of health information from experts, discussions with other rehab patients and workouts on exercise equipment—to get healthier and stay that way. Now, more than 36 sessions later, she’s lost 20 pounds and gained a new understanding of how to live a healthy life. She’s actually ”graduated” but continues to attend the sessions.
