How to Be Prepared For a Hurricane
We are at the peak of the hurricane season and preparedness is key to be ready at any moment without stress and over-spending.
Here are the top 3 things you should do when preparing for a hurricane:
- Protect your home, yourself and your pets: If you have to install shutters, call someone to help you with this task and schedule it. Gather all your important documents like passport, birth certificates, ID, insurance policy, and some cash, put them inside a ziplock bag and keep them always in the same place so you don’t get confused when you need them most. Plan for your pets, which includes having ready crates, food and water. There are pet-friendly shelters but you have to book it ahead of time.
- Fill prescriptions: Don’t wait until the last minute to order your medication, the pharmacy could be closed. Talk to your doctor and plan to get your medication that needs to be cold or any medical devices that require power.
- Your groceries: We all know that we should buy non-perishable food but we should have a plan as well of what and how to cook it. If you are planning to use your grill, make sure you have enough charcoal or propane. The same with the portable gas stove. Get a cooler, fill it with ice and keep it in the refrigerator. Don’t pack your freezer with expensive food, if there is a power failure you will lose everything.
